Chapter Four

M

apping out my day while I wait for Hank to finish his business out back, I decide to stop by Sugar & Spice on my way to work. Not only am I addicted to Sylvia’s latest baked oatmeal bars, but I’m also curious about what the town gossip is about Ryan. I wonder if anyone else knew he had a sister. Surely, she’ll be in town soon to tidy up his affairs. I only signed up for one workshop today, and it isn’t until this afternoon.

Am I allowed to opt out of this one? That place didn’t impress me.

Yes, I can drop you off back here at lunch if you’d like. That way you can gaze at the cat next door with no judgment. I chuckle to myself while he merely gives me his best doggy glare.

Hank, if you were scared and didn’t know what to do, how long do you think you could last outside?

If you’re thinking of Pepper, that mongrel wouldn’t last a minute. He’s too pampered. But me, I’m a survivor.

Rolling my eyes, I knew better than to ask him the question. I make a note to tune into any Pepper talk at the bakery as well. Maybe he’s already been found, and it’s a non-issue. This leads me back to the sister. I wonder if she lives wherever they grew up. I also wonder if Mary still lives there since it seems she and Ryan knew each other much more closely than I’d realized. Not that it’s a crime to have known him; she just puts off weird energy.

Gathering my things, my stomach growls on our way out. I may have to get oatmeal bars and cookies. Stepping onto the front steps, a strange feeling overwhelms me, almost like I’m being watched, but there is no one within eyesight. It’s the same feeling I felt when I was leaving the convention center yesterday.

I’d been so busy the past few days, I hadn’t meditated or worked on cleansing my spaces, which is a huge “no-no” according to Aunt Vivian. When I’d first met her, her practices seemed a little odd to me, but as I’d embraced them, I had to admit that there was a definite peace of mind when using her advice.

Remind me to sage myself, and you, when we get to the office, Hank.

Trotting along, he dips his head to let me know he’s listening. His mind is rather quiet at the moment, which leads me to believe he feels the same things I do, and he’s focusing right now. Odd sensations aside, our walk to Sugar & Spice is drama-free. And, as suspected, the space is filled with townspeople all chatting about their theories as to what happened.

“Good morning, Tansy. How are you and Hank today?” Sylvia chirps her usual cheerful greeting. I’d often wondered if she ever had a bad day. She just always seems to smile and spread joy.
